The narrator recalls the ill-fated decisions of Benito Mussolini, who, in 1940, ambitiously tried to revive the Roman Empire by attacking British forces in Egypt. However, Italy’s military was far weaker than it appeared, and its troops faced defeat on several fronts. The narrator vividly remembers a British plane crashing near their home in a Sicilian town, witnessing the pilot parachuting to the ground while locals hoped he would be captured. These memories are set against the backdrop of Mussolini’s regime, symbolized by an image of the dictator painted on a nearby wall. In the third story, two soldiers, Troxel and Atol, attend a meeting of the Supreme Council in an advanced, futuristic setting. They learn of an impending planetary disaster, as the Earth is gradually sinking into the sea. To save humanity, the Council plans an exploration of a newly discovered planet, Atlis, which is passing close to Earth. Despite the challenges, the Council agrees to send an expedition led by Troxel to explore Atlis and determine if it can sustain life. The story explores themes of survival and adaptation in the face of planetary destruction.
